Back to Projects Waterford Visitor Centre

A 200-year old quayside granary in Waterford has been converted and extended to create a new visitor centre and regional tourist office for the historic city, displaying the cultural and industrial heritage of the area, including Waterford’s renowned history of glass making. The completed centre adds an important new dimension to the cultural life of the city and surrounding region.

The conversion reinterprets and enhances the industrial character and identity of the building, bringing it to life with a new significance for the city. Two of the existing low-headroom floors were removed in order to form three floors of gallery and exhibition space. These are linked by two adjacent high-volume atria, to display Waterford’s history using set-recreations, multi-media and interactive presentations. Other public facilities provided include an information centre, a shop, and a café in a new extension adjacent to a landscaped urban court.
