Comprising of 52 apartments with ancillary support spaces on a rectangular urban site in the City Centre, this development for ClĂșid looks to establish a continuous, secure perimeter of accommodation on three sides of the city block that addresses and animates the adjacent Charles Street, Charles Lane and Tyrrell Place while opening on the fourth side to admit light and address the adjacent Free Church, a Protected Structure.
At the heart of this perimeter block is a private courtyard garden where residents can meet, gather and feel secure. This inner court is lined by screened deck-access which provides access to units as well as animation and theatre to this private space.
The project is conceived as two distinct blocks which turn and step in response to adjacent building height and site conditions. Materials set up a distinction between the exterior street elevations and the interior more private world of the courtyard.
