Back to Projects Library, Institute of Technology Tralee

The new Library and Administration Building is part of the phased development of the Institute of Technology Tralee. The Institute is the major third-level education facility in the Kerry region, providing techical education and training for 3,500 full and part time students.

A new three story hall provides the main entrance to the Library and the Business and Information Technology Building. The Library itself is on three levels of accommodation formed around a central void. A large cubic reading room announces the point of arrival at the building and provides the focus for the entrance to the assembly of buildings.

The building is naturally ventilated and includes various strategies to facilitate this. BMS actuated window vents provide primary ventilation. Large louvred screens are also BMS linked for night-time cooling of the exposed concrete structure. Clerestory vents encourage stack ventilation. Voids in the building encourage air circulation. Banks of solar panels produce hot water for the building as well as other campus buildings.
