This library has a deliberately uninstitutional character and an open, welcoming plan. Quiet areas are reserved on an upper level for reference, research and study. A coffee bar, exhibition space and an area for children are incorporated into the design. Each section has been laid to be open and accessible to everyone.

The construction reflects Redcar’s history of steel industry. The structure consists of steel columns and long span castellated beams, supporting a folded roof whose profile forms continuous rooflights over most of the floor area. The walls are of blue Straffordshire engineering bricks and of corrugated vinyl coated steel.
